Grantham out, Tucker in!

Eric Wright and Mel Tucker at OTAsThe Browns Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was let go earlier this week by the Browns organization.  He had been there three seasons and when the Browns offense was lacking, Grantham’s defense would step up to the plate. That was not the case this year…The Browns defense was considered the worst in the league at times but what leveled it out was an offense that could score a lot of points.

With all of that being said, Mel Tucker will take over as new defensive coordinator.  Before accepting the job he was the Browns’ defensive backs coach.  He was Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator in 2004, and prior to that he coached three previous years with the Buckeyes and also at LSU and Miami-Ohio.

He is a young guy with a lot of fire and a lot of potential.  Just like the Browns went after the offense in the off-season, look for the Browns organization to go after the other side of the ball this year.

Tucker received a two-year extension on his current contract and is under contract with the Browns through the 2010 season.

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/catch_all/nfl_image/joe-thomas-inside.jpg Rookie left tackle Joe Thomas is heading to Hawaii after Jason Peters from Buffalo dropped out due to an injury.

Thomas will join teammates Braylon Edwards & Joshua Cribbs, while three others such as Eric Steinbach, Derek Anderson & Kellen Winslow remain first alernates.

With Thomas going to the Pro Bowl it is the first Browns’ offensive lineman since Cody Risien 20 years ago.

This past season was a great season for Thomas, starting all 16 games and helped Jamal Lewis rush for over 1,300 yards (another great feat for the Browns).

“I am thrilled to be selected for the Pro Bowl and for the opportunity to play with some of the best players in the NFL,” Thomas said. “I understand that being selected as an alternate means that someone else could not attend, so I wish the best for Jason Peters. But this is truly an honor and I will do my best to represent the Browns and the AFC in Hawaii.”

Front office to listen to offers for Anderson

Derek AndersonCoach Crennel said in a recent interview that the Cleveland Browns were open to trade offers for quarterback Derek Anderson.

I will think the Browns will get plenty of offers with a good number of teams looking for a solid QB this off season.  Miami, Kansas City, Baltimore, Carolina, Atlanta, Minnesota, Chicago and San Francisco, all needing a strong QB to build a team on.  With Anderson a restricted free agent looks like he might be leaving the team on the lake.

From the sounds of it, it looks like the front office is pushing forward with the likes of Brady Quinn to lead the team when they dust off the pads for the ‘08 season.  Of course you never know if the offers will be good enough for Anderson to leave the Browns, and we would be thrilled to keep him around, but he will be getting top dollar b/c of his performance this past season.

Anderson has shown that he can lead a team.

Welcome to the Snow Bowl

The Browns put up a baseball score and still ended up pulling off a great win at home in the snow. 8-0 was the final, and if you were like me you were just wondering and hoping the game clock to move quicker. I didn’t want it to stop, at all!

The offensive line really stepped it up in the white powder and opened up amazing holes for Jamal Lewis to run through. The man broke off 163 yards, he had the most yards in the NFL this past Sunday and he was running in 2 inches of snow. Way to go Jamal!

Edwards had some amazing catches to keep quite a few drives alive when it looked like we were to go 3 and out. Such a team effort this past Sunday.

But who could forget the 2 field goal kicks. To make 49 yard field goal in Blizzard like conditions is one Dawson will be telling his grandkids someday. All it took were 2 FG’s, 1 safety, and a lot of running the clock on Jamals part.

With this win it put the Bills out for extending their season into playoff contention. The Browns have as of right now secured a Wild Card spot (of course nothing is a quarantee), but they might have a shot at a Division title if the Steelers keep playing like they have been. The Browns play the Bengals in Cincinnati this Sunday and then have San Fran at home to close out the regular season.

Eric Steinbach, has reached the top of the 2008 Pro Bowl voting with 370,862 for his position.  Even though voting only makes up for 1/3 of the of the overall vote to get him into the Pro Bowl, it still is pretty impressive with his first year in the Brown and Orange uniform.

The teams will be announced at 4 p.m. Tuesday, December 18 on a special NFL Total Access 2008 NFL Pro Bowl Selection Show on NFL Network. The Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, February 10 and will be televised by FOX.

Make sure you check it out, just think…He could be going to the Pro Bowl to represent the Bungals but they are to cheap and passed up on a key player for the O line.

Thank you Mike Brown!!!

It all comes down to this!

With the Browns in a possible Wild Card Playoff spot, this game is highly important.

The NFL has released its playoff scenarios for Week 15 and it turns out the Browns aren’t too far away.

All the Browns (8-5) need to assure a Wild Card spot in the upcoming playoffs is:

  • A win over the Buffalo Bills (7-6) Sunday
  • A Tennessee Titans (7-6) loss
  • A Denver Broncos (6-7) loss or tie

This would be their first playoff appearance since 2002.

Even though I am impressed, sorry Highly impressed, with the Browns this year after how they started out.  Thanks Charlie Frye.  The Browns have yet to put a team away.  What do you mean by that?  Well, what I mean is that no matter what the lead is going into the fourth quarter the Browns have yet to keep that lead.

  • The Browns almost Blew it last weekend against the 3-10 New York Jets
  • The got a lucky bounce to send the game into overtime against the Ravens, a game where they were up the entire game.

We lose those 2 games we don’t have any shot in the Playoffs.  This game is big, andI feel the key is to get out to a decent 2 TD lead so that when the 4th quarter comes around, we have that leeway of comfort to push us into a playoff birth.

Jamal Lewis I think is going to have a great game rushing over 100 yards, and with Edwards on the brink of setting a club record with TD catches in a single season. That is just going to put a fire under him to where he will be unstoppable.

Toughest game so far

This week the Browns have what many sports analyst have said, “a slim chance of stretching their win streek to 4.”  The Cleveland Browns have not won 3 in a row since 2001, which was a big accomplishment in itself.

With the Bungals pretty much out of it for the season, it seems that the Browns vs. Steelers rivalry is back in full affect.  Pittsburg is favored by 10 in Sunday’s matchup but it could be the best game so far this season.

The Steelers defense ranks first in the league in several categories so far this season. That’s nothing new.

But as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has matured since joining the league three years ago, the team’s offense has increasingly become more proficient and is now beginning to gain a reputation of its own.

The Browns run defense has improved, however, since allowing 100-yard rushers in each of the team’s first six games.

The team limited the Rams to 79 yards on the ground during a win on Oct. 28. The Seahawks rushed for 105 during another Browns win last week.

The pass defense, however, is another story. They’ve allowed 300 or more passing yards in four of eight games this season including the last two.

If the defense doesn’t do more than they’ve been doing to create a pressure on the quarterback, hold tight in coverage, and then, prevent Roethlisberger from making plays on the run, it could be a long day for the Browns in Pittsburgh against an ever-improving Steelers offense.

Browns are #3

Sports Illustrated just put out an article showing what the NFL teams offer the fans on any given Sunday. The Browns Hit #3

Cleveland Browns Stadium Break down here

Bengals were 19th.

If you have yet to experience any NFL game live, I highly recommend it.  It is a huge rush.  Especially if your team isn’t horrible and wins.

Can we make it 3?

The Browns did something this week they haven’t done sine 2004.  They had back to back wins.  That seems like a insane accomplishment but when you have only won 3 to 4 games in an entire season for the last few years, it is a huge feet.

The question now is, can the Browns make it three in a row?  Jamal Lewis is getting healthier and healthier, but with Jason Wright showing promise in the backfield we really don’t need to rely on Lewis as much.

This will be an extremely tough game for the Browns and I think I had predicted that they would put up a good fight but would not come out victorious in the end, but I think they might pull off a victory.  The defense needs to stop the run, the short runs that keep the defense out there and wears them out.  If they can come up with a couple 3 and outs back to back and have Seattle second guessing everything about their game, then I feel the Browns have a chance.

They have fire, and the Browns passion is back.  We are no longer the worst team in Ohio, thank you Cincinnati, we are on a rampage and we will not stop until the playoffs.

Crennel not satisfied

CrennelLike he is still at the Country Buffet, Coach Crennel is not happy with the 3-3 record of the Browns.  Even though most browns fans are excited at that fact that the Browns are not the worst team in Ohio, Crennel says,

“I don’t want (the players) to think 3-3 is all that good because really it’s .500 and .500 usually doesn’t get you anywhere in this league,”

Going into the Bye week the Browns have yet to win on the road, that can be scarey due to the fact that 6 of the remaining 10 games are on the road.

Coach Crennel said that he would be using the Bye Week to work on the browns defense.  The defense ranks 30th in the NFL in points allowed per game and 31st in yards allowed per game (413.0).

Crennel knows this could be a pivitol year for him and the Cleveland Browns Organization.
